Red Dragon

A fierce red Dragon, scales hard, and teeth sharp.

Background

This model is a through put completion of an exercise done in class, A simple exercise to Block-out, sculpt, and re-topologize a dragon based on a simple concept sketch.

Tools

The Block-out, sculpt, and UVs were done using default tools with Alpha textures, some provided and some sourced.

Retopology was done automatically using QuadRemesher.

Baking and Texturing was done in Substance 3D Painter.

Challenges

It took a while to get Retopology results I liked, I tried a few auto-remeshers, including QRemeshify, and Blenders Built-in Remesh, both Failed to comprehend the mesh and built a new mesh based on Voxel calculations, any diagonal edges that were far from a clear axis came out quite jagged, instead of having a clean edge along the edge. Eventually I tried QuadRemesher, and it provided much more satisfying results.

For this project, I tried to use the Multi-resolution modifier, as a non-destructive method to sculpt, While it mostly worked, as I got into the 3rd Subdivision, if I was using a brush with pen-pressure options enabled, Blender hung up for minutes until it finalized the calculations, freezing again on the next stroke, even at only ~1million polycount. This resulted in more consistent and deep details that I was adding on the wings. The experience was both terrifying and frustrating, for fear blender may crash.

Somewhere along the way, I got confused by a graph under the Brush size, -confused because I didn't know what it did, and could see no effect when I changed it, I started up a new empty sculpt scene, and fiddled around with it, I realized after a little bit of messing with the graph and different brushes, that the Graph was for pen pressure, and it was switched off.

Completely resolved my confusion, The picture to the left is the test sphere, most of the strokes you can see are consistent in side, but there are a few to the lower side that vary, this is what that graph did, heavier pen bigger brush by default. which seems like a very useful feature, if pen-pressure didn't cause Blender to freeze on stroke with multi-resolution enabled.
